It is here!! I feel like people that garden start counting down the days to plant as soon as Christmas is done! For me, it was right after our Houston deep freeze at the beginning of December that completely decimated my fall garden.
Nevertheless, here we are! Planting season. My favorite – it’s the practice of HOPE and anticipation of all the good things which to be honest, we need more of in the world.
So without too many extra words, here are my favorite sources for the Garden…
Tomatoes: you need to trim off the bottom third of leaves/stems and plant these starts pretty deep. Add bone meal in the actually hole you plant them in. Trust me please…they need it as they are heavy feeders.
Overall fertilizer: I love and use biochar, TeaCo and slow release seaweed pellets. You want to fertilize every two weeks for 8 weeks and I alternate through these. The biochar and seaweed you can get on Amazon and the TeaCo you can get here.
The snaps peas will come out in a month or so as it will be too hot for them and the cucumber will be taking off by then so that is why they are on the same trellis set up.
Garden Beds: mine are from Vego Garden and they have been so durable and easy to put together. I do wish the sides were wider so I could sit as I work in the beds but it’s not a deal breaker. You can get their garden beds here. They currently have 40% sitewide which is kind of a big deal!
If you want to make some there are several resources on Pinterest. A few of my favorites:
Cinder block and mortar here
Simple Cedar Garden Beds here.
No Dig method here (I did this for my back existing garden beds to reset them as fruit and wildflower patches)
Seeds: I love Johnnys seeds…they sell in bulk so it’s cost effective. I also love Buchanans if you are local to Houston. They have a great, and healthy, variety of plant starts as well as local seeds.
Trellis’ stay tuned – I will be building these in Insta stories over the next week for my tomatoes, pole beans and cucumbers.
Any questions – don’t hesitate to reach out!
Happy planting!
